he
fort of Chittaur has perhaps witnessed the most bloody sacrifices and
fiercest battles in the history of Rajasthan. So much so that the fort is
the symbol of Rajpootana's honor and chivalry.
Every tale emanated
from here is a legend in the hearts of the people of Rajasthan as they take
great pride in narrating such stories. The fort has been sacked
thrice by mighty armies and each time it became a scene of jauhars (mass
self-immolation by women to save honor) and fights by men until certain
death. The fort has also remained the mute spectator to the stories of the
eternal beauty Padmini and the great saint poetess Meera.

Chittaur
fort is six kilometers long and is perched on a high plateau reachable by
driving through several gates. Inside the fort are the ruins of several
temples and palaces; the intact ones include the impressive tower of
victory, tower of fame, Meera temple and Gaumukh reservoir. For the people
seriously interested in such kind of atmosphere the place is really worth
spending more time.
Chittaur has tons of history behind it, there is virtually nothing of the
present times in the town. A little away from the town is the castle of
Bijaipur, which offers a comfortable stay in the rural atmosphere. There is
ample opportunity here to visit the villages, tribes, folk arts and
appreciate folk music. Another rural getaway is Bassi, which is also a short
distance away.
