ome
of the most beautiful stretches of landscape, wildlife and lifestyle in
Rajasthan are located where modern vehicles may not afford to reach. Safaris
are, therefore, very popular and these are great fun and adventurous too. In
any safari, the glimpses of the local lifestyle never leave you spared.
Camel Safari
The most popular safari but the most difficult to understand. A ride on
camel back is bumpy and you can hope to cover a maximum distance of 10
-14kms in a day, without causing much soreness to the thighs (of the rider,
not the camel!). Traversing long distance takes many days.

However,
a
camel safari, which may last from 4 hours to several days
(depending upon your budget and time), is well punctuated by restful stops.
En route you may visit traditional villages, magnificent monuments and
magical sand dunes. Overnight stays are often provided in idyllic camps
coming alive with spectacular folk performances and traditional meals. The
most popular circuits are around Jaisalmer and Bikaner. Those in the
Shekhawati towns are catching up fast.

Jeep Safari

Rajasthani
villagers have still not caught up with modernity Cars and Jeeps are
considered the modern version of camels (with greater speed, of course).
Half-day long trips to such villages are therefore popular by jeeps. Bishnoi
villages, around Jodhpur and Nagaur, are among the most visited - partly due
to the unique lifestyle of the Bishnoi community and partly to their
legendary ethics on ecology.
The extensiveness of Ranthambhore National Park and other Wildlife
sanctuaries permit the use Jeep as the best and safest mode to see the
diverse wildlife in Rajasthan. The dusty and not so comfortable ride is
particularly rewarding if you are lucky enough to see the elusive tiger.

Horse Safari

Not
so long ago the Maharaja and their Thikanedaara (nobleman) used to keep fine
collections of studs for their personal use. These horses are now offered to
the tourists to explore the regions around the palaces that have now been
converted into heritage hotels. The way a horse safari functions is the same
as a camel safari except that it is popular in rougher, hilly and forested
terrain. The regions of Aravali ranges around Udaipur are perfect for this
activity.

Elephant safari
Not a popular mode of taking a safari, elephants are sometimes used in
Jaipur for some royal splurges.
Other modes
Bicycle rides in Shekhawati towns and cycle rickshaw tour through Keoladeo
Ghana Bird Sanctuary are the most advisable and ecologically friendly means
to explore these areas.
